Disappointing purchase

"I have since returned the product! I gave the machine a try, as I love the old featherweight Singer sewing machines! To its credit, it sews a neat 1/4 inch stitch, which is nice for quilters! But it is cheaply made, loud, and not at all what I expected. A good beginners machine! But for the money, I can pick up a good 2nd hand metal, not plastic machine!"

Singer 160- forget about it!

Pros: different
Cons: cheap looking machine
"We were exited to get this Singer, it looks so good on pictures and videos. But, what a disappointment. There is nothing special about this machine and it is covered with a tons of very cheap plastic. It is not shiny and it is more very dark gray than black. And everything on this machine feels cheap. You can do way better with a different machine and save some money. It does not come even close to Kenmore. I would think Singer will do way better on this machine"

Response from Costco:By BuyerSmall AppliancesMay 24, 2012
Thank you for your review. The machine is black, the high gloss finish may cause it to not look as dark in certain lighting conditions. The housing for the machine is coated with Duratec, the same material used for all of Singer machines. This limited edition usable show piece merges the old Singer look with today's mechanical and electronic quality, a quality that is backed up by a 25 Year Limited Warranty, which includes a 5 year total parts and labour protection plan.

Singer Sewing Machine

"Wow, what a toy, it even threads itself, backstitches without the peddle, haven't had time to play with everything it offers, but I know I'm going to have lots of fun with this one. And I love the nostalgic look."

Nice stitch

Pros: stitch quality
"I wanted this machine as one to take to retreats. It has a lovely stitch. Has lots to play with. Best alternative to finding a Singer featherweight!
Just playing with it for one evening, I made the discovery of the hand stitch button. Very interesting since Babylock made a whole machine for this one stitch.

Huge Improvement on my old machine

"This is my first ‘automated’ machine. I started on my great-grandmother’s pedal Singer, graduated to my mother’s black metal electric Singer & haven’t had anything fancier than a white(ish) metal zig-zag since then. It did everything I wanted from clothes to bedspreads, but it was time to move on. Now that I have, I don't know why I waited so long. I’ll admit that part of the attraction of this machine is the nostalgia factor. (That is why they designed it this way, after all.) I’ve only made a few things (bandanas for the dogs, curtains for the bedroom & a slip cover for a chair) since I got this, but it has been easy to use & I fancied a few things up easier with the auto-stitches. Thus far, I am enjoying it. I like the bigger bed (which can still be removed for sleeves & other small pieces). It provides a much more stable sewing surface. It took me a few tries to get the hang of the automatic threader (which I managed thanks to the DVD), but I love that feature. Also the auto reverse at the end of your stitching is a great addition. (Note: for those who don’t like the plastic, if this were metal it would weigh a ton. The original “portable” sewing machines were a misery to move. Yes, black gloss plastic shows fingerprints, but so did the old high gloss black metal machines. This is a great improvement on those & I didn't find fingerprints to be much of a problem.)"
