Good product poor quality

Pros: decent price, good size hdd, it's been recording 24/7 with zero issues, good as a very basic system, decent daytime resolution
Cons: complicated to backup up captured footage, poor camera resolution, poor night vision, night vision & image quality is useless over 10ft, will not work with a mac, often lost network settings for remote viewing, complicated network setup
"For the price, this surveillance system is worth it. I've had it running for about a year now and the settings are set to record 24/7 and I've had zero issues with it. The DVR is capable of recording about 11 days worth of footage before re-recording over itself. My issue with the system was primarily with the IR night vision. I had 4 cameras set to survey the entire front of my home, including the street and intersection where my vehicles are primarily parked. Let's face it, almost all thefts/vandalism or any other sort of trouble maker usually lurks at night which is when the system is most needed. On two different occasions I had a hit and run and an attempt of two guys trying to steal my fathers pick up from in front our home. Both encounters were caught on video but because of the poor night vision, the vehicle make and model wasn't clear enough to make out and the same can be said for the two guys trying to steal the pick-up. The pick-up is parked about 50-55' from the camera and my VW which was invloved in the H&R is parked about 80-100' away. Another issue I have with the Swann system is the absolutely horrendous software that is included. Playback of the backed up footage is complicated and awkward to use and the image quality lessens even more once converted to a manageable .AVI file. Network setup for remote viewing is complictaed as well and will probably need to be setup with the aid of a Swann rep. My sister runs the Q-SEE surveillance system which in my opinion is far superior in every aspect. The night vision of the Q-SEE FAR surpasses the quality of the Swann's and the overall setup menu and backup process is much more simple to deal with. As well as better night vision, the daytime colors are more vibrant and the overall image quality is far better at 600 TV lines as opposed to Swann's 480 TV lines.
Something to be considered as well is that Swann software to playback/backup or remote view is ONLY compatible with a windows based computer. So in order to be able to use the Swann software, I need to install Windows XP using Bootcamp on my Mac. With the Q-SEE system, the software is both Windows and Mac compatible which is a HUGE bonus

Excellent Purchase

Pros: works just great
Cons: swann should put a little more info on their docs
"Bought this online a week ago. Easy to setup and works beautifully, Interface for computer works very well. Only problem was setup with my BB smartphone for remote view. Swann was really helpful and set it up in no time. Great product, great company service."

Problems

Pros: easy outdoor setup., easy to aim, fast delivery
Cons: frustrating when help needed re: dvr connecting!, nothing to connect splitter to
"I received this camera set about ten days ago. After situating the 4 of them on designated spots around the outside of the house, I finally drilled a hole through a wall, and then attempted to connect to the DVR, That was three days ago. I'm still trying but am unable to do so. Unfortunately, it takes 4 to 5 days to get help from the Tech Staff, so I still have no idea if the Defend & Deter, 8-channel DVR with 4 CCD Cameras has to go back, or not!"

Swann Cameras

"This was better then I expected. Very easy to install and the quality is excellent. I am able to view from my mobile devices and review recordings on my PC no matter where I am. Great value and delivered in 2 days. Well worth the money."
