Very Happy With Service

"I bought a cash card online with my visa card to use in store instead of having to use my debit card. This way I don't miss out on the airmiles."

Cumbersome Cash Card activation!

"I was not sure if the PIN # needed to be entered so I of course call the 800 # again...and then to confirm that the cards had been activated had to punch in 8 separate 16 Digit #'s to make sure they were activated. I know heightened security is required but this process is very cumbersome and time consuming... especially when you have smaller denominations cards! There I feel better...lol!!"

Convenient

Pros: quick and easy activation, can purchase with a credit card, easy to check balance online or in store, great for use at costco gas stations
Cons: none yet
"I was a bit hesitant to order a cash card after reading the online reviews about confusing activation. Well, the card arrived a few days after being ordered and following the very clear instructions in the accompanying letter, the card was active within a few minutes. The whole activation process (from ripping open the envelope to a fully acive card) took less than 10 minutes. It couldn't have been simpler!"

Activation process confusing

Pros: good if you want to pay by visa or mastercard, can give as a gift
Cons: confusing activation/already activated process.
"I ordered two 25.00 cards online and when I ordered them, it said online that you have to call a 1-800 number to activate them. When I received them in the mail, there was a letter enclosed but there was no info on how to activate or even that they had to be activated. So I called the number on the enclosed letter and punched in the card number that was on the back and an automated message told me the balance that was on the card(which is the correct balance I wanted on them).
My point is that why have a message online saying you have to activate them when you don't.
It was confusing!

Great card

Pros: can pay by credit card, great gift
Cons: takes 2 bussiness days to activate $100 card
"The great thing about purchasing a costco cash card is you can pay by a credit card. I should have done this long time ago. I always make sure I have a costco card available. I ordered 3 cards $100, $50, $25 denomination. I only have to activate the $100 card. Next time I will only order $25/$50 card. It takes 2 business dats to activate the card. Great to give it as a gift."

Costco Cash Card

Pros: can use credit card
Cons: activation is a pain
"It's great to be able to use a credit card and send in the mail as a gift. I like to be able to have this cash card for myself as well. It helps the Costco trip to not "seem" so expensive sometimes.
The activation process is really poor! Very disappointing, actually. I bought the card online on a Friday. I received it in the mail the following Thursday. So about 6 days later. It came with instructions to call a 1-800 number, enter option 8 and and then dial an extension, at which point you leave a verbal message with your name, Costco card number and cash card number. It says it will be activated with 48 hours. THERE MUST BE A BETTER WAY!!?
Online activation would be great. A phone call made to an automated system (like when activating a credit card over the phone) would be great! In store activation would be nice. Anything more efficient would be good!"

Best choice if you have time

Pros: quality gift to anyone, can pay with credit card
Cons: longer processing time
"Convenient way to shop in different departments at Costco. Helpful if you have neither amex nor debt card. Moreover, it took seven business days from order to activation when ordered through online. So the quickest way to get this is at a costco warehouse.
I was told that the 2 % executive member reward will be given only at the point of use. For that, the user should be an executive member."

Very convenient

Pros: very convenient, makes it possible to use other credit cards
Cons: it is basically cash so don't lose it, not rechargeable online
"Despite all the reviews saying otherwise, my card was received active and I didn't have to do anything before using it at Costco. Very convenient! Too bad you can't recharge online."

So So

Pros: can use your credit card of choice to purchase, works just like a cash purchase great!
Cons: activation is a pain needs improvement badly, topping up questionable not available online
"Works fine as a cash card after activated, but activation is slow and time consuming.
Activation should not be harder than activating a new credit card is!
Description of product is insufficient.
Online balance check is not clear, I had to search to find it under my account details.
Topping up is not explained, should be available online but is not.

Still Frustrated!!!

"WHEN oh WHEN is Costco going to follow Tim Hortons lead and make their cash cards reloadable...it would save $$$$$$$$$ in labour and postage charges; minimize time between customer ordering and customer spending; and minimize the amount of plastic that has to be recycled (I'm assuming that Costco does recycle the plastic cards...)."

As safe as carrying cash, but not as flexible

"I love, love, love Costco, however I am not convinced that the cash card makes any sense for most people.
The main benefit for me was that these cards allow one to use a Visa/Mastercard credit card to buy from Costco stores.
The disadvantages are:
- takes time to ship/activate
- activation process is a bit mysterious (leave a message etc..?)
- security .. there is none, if you lose the card it is like losing cash..
- today my wife was at a Costco store returning some pants and asked if they could load the refund onto a Costco cash card she already had. my wife was told that they would not be able to load the refund onto her cash ard, and (more worryingly) she was told that the cash card she had was being phased out!? What does this mean? Does that mean if I have $300 Costco Cash Card at home it will become worthless? I don't understand what 'being phased out' means.. how long will my existing cards be valid for?

Says rechargable but wasnt?

"Don't know if its just me but I had a pretty tough time activating the card. After 48 hrs, it still wasn't activated. Might be just that I was trying to use it during their switchover of card systems or something?
But as well, I bought cause I thought I would be able to reload but I was told after it wasn't possible. Maybe that's not the same as rechargeable? Not sure. But not a great experience with this whole process over all to be honest."

Poor activation process

"Received cards, sent email to activate, waited 2 days, received email that it will be activated in 2 business days. Costco: could you comeup with a more streamline activation process?"

"it's a good card to use at the gas station.when it's -40C outside swiping just one cash card is easier than two... th other on being your membership card and your debit / amex card. I love it!"

GREAT OPTION

Pros: convenient for those with access to costco outlet, can be easily purchased at any costco warehouse, may be returned with a receipt for a refund
Cons: not helpful if no acess to a costco warehouse, only other alternative is to order online and wait
"Being able to use a cash card online is a great alternative for people who don' t have credit cards or the desire to use them. From what I have read it is a nuisance to order them online with the delivery time and activation process. HOWEVER, for those who can get to a Costco outlet, the process is easy. Just purchase the amount you want on the card (No charge for the card itself) and it is ALREADY ACTIVATED SO NO ADDITIONAL PHONE CALL. Enter the number and PIN on the back of the card when checking-out your online purchase and you're good to go. Plus, if your order is not in stock Costco doesn't debit your card and you can return it for a refund. Once again, worth it if you have access to a Costco warehouse."

Great way to send a care package to your kids!

Pros: recipient of gift card doesn't have to be member
Cons: call and wait for activation better tech avail
"The comments some of the other reviewers made aren't relevant to me as I don't shop with a credit card, I try to pay cash/debit whenever possible.
My adult son lives over 4 hours away from me and shipping a care package can be expensive. Sending him a Costco gift card allows him to get the groceries and sundries he needs at the best possible price and I save money on shipping costs.
It would be great to see Costco offer the option of being able to give the recipient the ability to receive the gift card immediately by sending an email with an authorization for purchase of a Costco gift card which is processed when they make the individual makes the purchases so noone has to stand in line twice unnecessarily.

Cons: you have to wait for it in the mail

A pain

"Sure the cash is a way to maximize your credit card rewards point, but it's time-consuming and inefficient. My cash card takes about 10 days to arrive. After that I have to call and leave a message with a "cash card activater." Then I have to wait for them to call back. Surely with today's technology, COSTCO can come up with something more user-friendly."
